There are ways you can throw your own starfish back in the sea. Don't support puppy mills by supporting stores that sell puppies and kittens. Spay or neuter your pets to avoid accidental breeding. Support rescue and the RESCUE HEROES. If you can't donate a lot, that's okay. If many each donate a little, it will all add up, and enable RESCUE HEROES to continue with their life saving work. Links to some Rescues. Lastly, if you have room in your heart and in your home, consider adopting from a rescue organization. They do a pretty good job of matching people and pets. Mostly these are good dogs that came from bad owners or circumstances. A rescued dog knows he has been rescued and will gift his saviors with total, unconditional love. |
Unfortunately, as long as people buy puppies from pet stores, the puppy mills will supply them, and the dogs used for breeding will continue to suffer . I often equate the work of RESCUE HEROES with the story of a young boy going down a length of beach, picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean -- Try as he might, he knows he can't save them all, but what a difference it makes to those he saves. ... What a difference a year makes to a rescued dog! |
Puppy mills breed soley for profit, with no regard for the health and comfort of their "breeding stock." The pet stores selling these puppies, count on making a profit from impulse purchases, knowing how irresistible and appealing young puppies and kittens can be. They are the major cause of the over population of unwanted animals. Every puppy mill baby sold in a pet store, is an incentive for the puppy mill to continue to breed for profit. |
Too soon the novelty wears off for many who bought the cute little puppy on impulse, and the dog is abused, neglected, or dumped in city shelters and pounds. For far too many, this is their last stop. |
This is where the RESCUE HEROES step in. These are the selfless people, mostly volunteers with limited funding, who save, and find homes for, as many of the throw aways as they possible can, often depending on donations and reaching deep into their own pockets to house, feed, groom, and meet the medical needs of these animals, including innoculations and spay/neuter. |
